New Year’s Resolutions

new years resolutions

According to Wikipedia, “A New Year’s resolution is a commitment that a person makes to one or more personal goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit. A key element to a New Year’s resolution that sets it apart from other resolutions is that it is made in anticipation of the New Year and new beginnings.”

People committing themselves to a New Year’s resolution generally plan to do so for the entire following year. This lifestyle change is generally interpreted as advantageous.

According to the University of Scranton Journal of Clinical Psychology, 45 percent of Americans make one or more resolutions annually, and 38 percent are about weight.

So what do you need to succeed with this year’s resolutions?  Here are five tips to help!

  1. Do it for YOU and nobody else!
  2. Be realistic. Set small achievable steps to reach that ultimate goal!
  3. Write your goals down, post them where you can see them, and constantly check to see what steps you have made toward that ultimate goal.
  4. Don’t give up! If at first you don’t succeed, try try again! You may not reach that small step in the time line you put forth, but don’t give up. Tweak something and keep working toward that goal.
  5. Believe you can do it and ask for support if you need it.

The University of Scranton research found that while many people do fail to keep their resolutions for an entire year, those who set them at all are 10 times more likely to achieve their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions. So go ahead and make some resolutions and start to change your life in 2013!
