It’s that time of year again where we decide to make health-based resolutions to start the New Year right. Whether your new year resolutions are to lose weight, reach a fitness milestone or to combat health conditions, it is important to be realistic to set yourself up for success. Here are a few tips to help you stick to and achieve your goals for the New Year:
- Goals should be realistic and achievable. Saying you are going to exercise every day when you haven’t been doing this consistently sets yourself up for failure, especially if you have a busy lifestyle. Instead, make a goal of going to the gym twice a week and once that becomes a habit, add another day. If your goal is food-related, make sure it is something you can do for the long term. Instead of giving up a food, limit your portions or how often you eat it.
- Don’t overwhelm yourself. If you want to lose a substantial amount of weight, the thought of getting to that goal can be overwhelming. Instead, break it up into losing 1-2 pounds a week or 5 pounds a month. Those smaller goals add up! Plus, every time you achieve the smaller goal, you will feel accomplished and motivated! If you want to start running, start by running to the first stop sign, and then every few days go an additional stop sign. You will be running miles before you know it!
- Don’t give up! We all have challenges and slip-ups. Just take one day at a time, and if you have a bad day, move on and don’t beat yourself up. It’s much better to focus on your successes and what you did well rather than the negatives. It takes time to change habits. Keep in mind your motivation for change and eventually you will meet your goals.
