Are you at risk?

If you think you may have diabetes, this page may help you differentiate between what is normal and what is not. If you have many of the symptoms or risk factors, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with your physician to obtain an official diagnosis. Treatment cannot begin unless you are diagnosed, but the sooner you see a doctor, the sooner you can change and improve your life.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is caused by the reduction or lack of insulin in the body. This lack of insulin causes a buildup of sugar in the blood vessels that can affect the heart, feet, eyes and other parts of the body. Diabetes is often coupled with high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Risk Factors

Many people are at risk for diabetes because of heredity alone. However, there are other factors that may put you at a higher  risk for diabetes, such as:

  • Family history
  • Being overweight
  • Inactivity
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure

Symptoms of Diabetes

  • Fatigue
  • Frequent thirst
  • Frequent urination

If you have any one of these symptoms, call your physician as soon as possible to be screened for diabetes. If you need help finding a doctor, contact us at  (815) 356-2382 or visit centegra.org/findadoc

Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes

Diabetes may be prevented or delayed by people who are at risk if they make appropriate lifestyle adjustments. While diabetes cannot be completely prevented, a few small lifestyle adjustments make it less likely you’ll develop the disease. Steps you can take to reduce your risk of diabetes are:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Exercise
  • Follow a proper diet
